Damaged Images

by | 25 April 2006 | Journals

The second number of Images Re-vues, out last month, collects articles on damaged images. Issue editor Dominique Donadieu-Rigaut thanks anthropology for pioneering the study of how images provoke action. Contributor applies Alfred Gell’s anthropological theory of art and action to Mary Richardson’s 1914 slashing of the Rokeby Venus (done to protest the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst). The issue ranges from the medieval to Robert Morris, and the articles on Ernest Pignon-Ernest and Athenian photography collections feature striking illustrations.
