‘Beyond the Aesthetic and the Anti-Aesthetic’

by | 7 July 2010 | Conferences, Theory

The theme for this year’s Stone Summer Theory Institute is “Beyond the Aesthetic and the Anti-Aesthetic”:

This year’s event addresses one of the central puzzles of contemporary art practice: the choice between continuations of modernism (with its aesthetic values) and the many kinds of postmodernism (which privilege politics, gender, identity, and many issues outside of aesthetics).

To be held July 18-24, the event has been co-organized by Diarmuid Costello and James Elkins. The opening and closing roundtable discussions will be open to the public, as will lectures by the organizers, Hal Foster, and Eve Meltzer. Other participants will include Jay Bernstein, Michael Kelly, Joaquín Barriendos, and Joana Cunha Leal.
