The National Gallery’s Sheeler exhibition features a catalogue by Charles Brock. While “exhibitions have been devoted respectively to his photographs, paintings, and drawings, the relationships across media in his work have been relatively neglected. The root cause of this [is that] Sheeler and his dealer, Edith Halpert, consciously emphasized the distinctions between his painting and photography while largely ignoring their connections” in order to make the paintings more saleable. “It is hoped that Charles Sheeler: Across Media … will allow the emergence of a more complete, integrated view of his career and clarify his relevance not only for contemporary audiences but for contemporary artistic practices as well.”
