A New Year Begins

A new academic year, that is. Blogger-student La Critika kicks it off: “Although it’s hard to believe that I spent 7 months working for a manufacturer of silicone breast implants, I think my time at the boob job put to rest, once and for all, any doubts I had about academia or graduate school. I love, love, love being in school again. The reading, the writing of papers, the serious conversations with strangers about things so arcane we have to invent a special language to speak about them. I love all of it.

I was in a crowded art history seminar tonight, and strong words were exchanged between the art historians and the film theorists about the centrality of stasis to theories of the visual image. Not only did I not roll my eyes, I was so intrigued that I took furious notes. It’s like I am a whole new graduate student! Out with cynical indifference! In with impassioned scribbling!”
