From Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa: “Italian officials have approved a scientific exploration designed to solve one of the greatest mysteries in the history of art: the whereabouts of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Battle of Anghiari, a large mural depicting a 16th century battle between the Florentine Republic and the Milanese … [Conservationist Maurizio] Seracini, who has dedicated his life to the search for the lost masterpiece, believes the four by six-and-a-half metre mural is still well preserved and hidden behind a wall in the Salone dei Cinquecento of Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio. Others believe it was destroyed. Seracini said he plans to use non-invasive scans designed to activate pigments behind the wall to determine whether Leonardo’s masterpiece is indeed where he believes it should be. ‘The exploration should take between one-and-a-half and two years.’”
