Contributor Anne Byrd writes: “Politics are especially prominent at this year’s Whitney Biennial: the first work that visitors see is Rirkrit Tiravanija’s and Mark di Suvero’s Peace Tower, clad in antiwar paintings. Explicitly political works inside the museum include Richard Serra’s “Stop Bush” poster and video documentations of Steve Kurtz’s interventions. Several artists address racial politics. Perhaps it was Dawolu Jabari Anderson’s Black History Month — Feel What the Excitement is All About that inspired the curators to put nearly all of them in the same room. The only thing likelier to inspire critical head-scratching would seem to be the show’s frequent mixing of the pointedly political with the dreamily hallucinogenic. One thing’s for sure: soft-core puppet porn is a sight to behold.”
