‘Common human responses to common problems’

In the April 2007 Burlington Magazine Susan Woodford reviews John Boardman’s The World of Ancient Art, which she calls an “impressive enterprise”: “Boardman’s basic tenet is that there are common human responses to common problems, and these responses to the environment are what shaped civilisations in Antiquity. He acknowledges that this view is already a trend among historians … but he notes that none ‘of these historians dwells much on art and architecture, except in passing.’ It is to fill this gap that his book has been designed … The chief emphasis — and the largest chapter — in the book concerns the urban civilisations that arose in the temperate zones from China, Egypt and Rome to Mexico and Peru.”
