America Does Not Exist

In this week’s New Yorker, Calvin Tomkins writes: “Having devoted itself for 75 years to nurturing and celebrating American art, [the Whitney Museum] is now willing — or almost willing to concede that there is no such thing. Belief in a native American aesthetic has steadily eroded over the past three decades, as art has become increasingly globalized.” Indicative of the museum’s new international outlook, this year’s Biennial was organized by two European curators and includes works by foreign-born artists living outside the United States. The point, says Whitney director Adam Weinberg in the article, is to explore “the dynamic between American artists and the rest of the world.” The next step in that direction will be a “Picasso and American Art” show in September of 2007.
