Karlholm on Preziosi

by Jon Lackman | 9 March 2006 | Books, Theory

In the March Oxford Art Journal Dan Karlholm takes the measure of Donald Preziosi’s 2003 Brain of the Earth’s Body: Art, Museums, and the Phantasms of Modernity: “The book was intended as a sequel to his department-shattering or, at least, consensus-challenging Rethinking Art History: Meditations on a Coy Science [1989] but it became a ‘rethinking of Rethinking Art History’ instead … The [first] chapter concludes by proclaiming that the fields of art history and museology have been the very ‘engines of modernity as such’. This is a bold claim, and one that Preziosi has been chewing on for quite some time, although spending his time repeating the claim, rather than proving or substantiating it, or, for that matter, contesting it. But, to be fair, this is the project of the following pages.”
